This can result from several pathologies, such as:

--presence of development of cartilage disruption and osteoarthritis

or, in your case:

--meniscal tears: can occur with many tears, but especially root tears

Osteoarthritis: This is typically seen with osteoarthritis.  As the joint space narrows the meniscus can be extruded or pushed out of the joint space.  You should be evaluated by an orthopedist if you are having pain.  There are several treatment options including physical therapy, nsaid's, and injections.

Prob Meniscus: Although the phrase "medial extrusion" is an unusual description of a condition of the knee, it sounds as if you are dealing with a medial meniscus tear with instability of the meniscus.  Most meniscal injuries/tears will not heal on their own due to the lack of blood supply.  Surgery is therefore often indicated.  See an orthopaedic surgeon for evaluation.

Yes: There are two main causes for pain on the medial side if the knee, 1) meniscus tear & 2) arthritis.  If the MRI showed protrusion or extrusion, then yes...A meniscus tear is possible. If your ortho surgeon told you to "live with it" then it wouldn't hurt to get a 2nd opinion.

Back extension using a modified "cobra" yoga pose and limiting flexion promotes healing. When seated, use of a lumbar roll maintains extension.

These are anatomical terms and do not refer to funtion
