Spinal diagnoses: The designators T5 etc. refers to thoracic vertebraes # 5,6,7. Herniations are a radiographic description of the disc (between bone) sticking out a little or sometimes more. Protrusion is another name for herniation and extrusion is a word for a break in the disc outer wall with loss of some of the disc contents (usually very painful). These are anatomical terms and do not refer to funtion

Definitions: Radiologists use terms such as protrusion, herniation to describe the size of a damaged disc, and the larger the rupture of the annulus fibrosis, the more effect the disc problem might produce. If there is rupture at three levels of the thoracic spine, that could provide a threat to the spinal cord. If this afflicts you, contact your doctor ASAP.

Thoracic: The discs are named by the vertebrae above and below them. For example, a disc called the T5-6 disc would be located between the 5th and 6 thoracic vertebrae. When you say disc herniations t5, t6, t7 you likely have 3 or possibly just 2 disc herniations in the thoracic spine. A protrusion is a kind of herniation still contained by back of disc wall, in extrusion material has leaked beyond.
