Antigens: Dtap is for infants up to 7 years- the diphtheria toxoid and pertussis antigens  are stronger.  Tdap is for children over 10 and adults- the tetanus toxoid is the same, but the pertussis antigen and diphtheria toxoid are lessened to prevent serious reactions while boosting immunity.

Absolutely!: It is perfectly safe and thank you for thinking of the safety of your granddaughter and the other kids in the NICU by getting protected against whooping cough (the "p"). By the way, at your age you should not get dtap, but Tdap.  Same vaccines but different quantities of the vaccine components to provide someone your age with the right amount of each.  dtap is for children under age 7.

: Both "Dtap and Tdap" are used to prevent diptheria, pertussis and tetanus.  Dtap is given to children, and Tdap is a "booster" for the same infections given to adults. Transverse myelitis should be evaluated by an infections disease physisican.

: Tdap (with the acellular pertussis component) is the adult formulation. The acellular pertussis vaccine, developed and given now for decades does not have the side effect problem of the old whole cell Pertussis vaccine we used before the 90's. It is often given in preparation for pregnancy or to expectant families to protect the newborn. It does not interfere with the Covid vaccine effectiveness.

: In a word, no. Taking the pertussis vaccine early is generally safe. At 21 years of age most young people are due for a booster but it would cause no harm to receive the vaccine early.
