Psych drugs: this is a drug that affects chemicals in your brain. You are on a relatively small dose so you might tolerate a quick taper of three days, but I always recommend at least 2weeks to taper of this sort of drug so you don't get rebound symptoms that might affect your mood, among other things.

i've been taking 10mg of amitriptyline for 6 months nightly. i'm being switched to 50mg of trazodone nightly. will i get any withdrawals from this? should i taper off the amitriptyline first?

: No real side effects are expected coming off of 10 mg of amitriptyline but you could cut the 10 mg pill in calf and use that for 3-5 days.  Good luck!

Smaller dosage: Ask your doctor to prescribe you 25 mg or 10 mg pills and taper off gradually.

1/2 life is 18-44 hr: So, it should be gone in a matter of days. You're probably safe now. at the longest, 10mg would be 5mg in 2 days, 2-1/2mg in another 2, 1 in another 2 - you're good to go! Be careful w/ other drugs too. Check ahead on the w/drawal issues before starting. Consider therapy as an alternative to drugs or at least as a way to reduce need. Best wishes!

Should be safe: to stop as you have not been on for a prolonged period.  However if you do develop symptoms related to withdrawal decrease to 25MG for two weeks then 25 mg every other day for two weeks.  Please confirm this with your doctor before stopping or weaning.

Need to know more: first you have to be symptom FREE! other-wise you will relapse. second, relates to number of previous episodes. this determines the length of treatment before a taper of dose is undertaken.  In depression, for example, if there has been more than 4 episodes, long term therapy is advised.

Very minimal: If you listed the dose correctly at 10 mg, you are taking virtually a homeopathic dose, that is a very minimal amount.  At this level, no need to taper, just stop.  Talk with you doctor about this, but the noted dose is far too small to help any of your problems.

i have been on elavil (amitriptyline) for a year or so, starting out at  25 and tapering to 10, which i have been on for 6  months or so. if i get off can i restart?

Yes: 10 mg of Elavil (amitriptyline) is a very low dose. That could be a starting dose at your age.  However,  I do not recommend that you make changes in your medications without consulting the MD who prescribed it.
