Umbilical cord: How long?  Infants rarely need to have the umbilical cord remnant removed. It will eventually fall off with time.

Post Surgical Pain: You didn't mention the type of surgery? Appendectomy? Laparoscopic surgery? Regardless, any intra abdominal intrusion will stretch the delicate peritoneal surface which, combined with the skin and muscle intrusion, can leave residual pain for quite some time. The pain should gradually subside, however, but if it doesn't soon, consult your surgeon and have it evaluated.

Umbilical sinus : Umbilical sinus is a rare condition that shows itself with persistent umbilcal drainage (usually in little kids). Its a result of an embryonic malformation. The treatment is surgery. No medication will cure it.

Not necessarily: The two main reasons to recommend hernia repair are (1)if the symptoms are interfering w/one's quality of life or (2)if the size of the hernia is large enough to lead to bowel incarceration. It sounds like you've answered #1; i advise you to see a hernia surgeon to help answer #2.

No: Hernias exist because the herniated material has slipped through a hole in the tissues that should hold it back. These tissues have a minimal blood supply and the herniation, even when episodic, separates the tissues so they could never heal on their own. Some hernias don't produce enough symptoms or risk of complications to require surgery, but many do.

Yes: An umbilical hernia has a higher risk of incarceration and strangulation of bowel.  If you have a very small umbilical hernia, it usually doesn't need to be repaired.  If your hernia is greater than 1 cm, i would advise consideration of elective repair, especially if it causes pain.

Accepted Answer

No: A hernia like yours is a weakness in the abdominal wall. Although it may increase or decrease in size with weight gain or weight loss, it will never completely close. That being said, it doesn't require that you have surgery to "repair" it. Almost everybody has a natural defect at their umbilicus, but we only treat them when they are symptomatic. It sounds as though yours is in that category.

Pain and lump: The symptoms would be similar to what you had before the operation. Not all symptoms or even lumps are indicative of recurrence. See your surgeon for an exam, and possibly testing to make sure.
