Depends: It really depends on where in the stomach the hernia is, size, whether it is a recurrent hernia, etc many hernias are repaired with cameras these days (laparoscopic) while others are better repaired open. Abdominal wall hernias (groin, belly button, etc) usually require you to avoid strenuous activity for 4 - 6 weeks after repair. Pain usually resolves in 1 to 3 weeks.
