Do i need surgery if my umbilical hernia does not hurt?

Not necessarily: The two main reasons to recommend hernia repair are (1)if the symptoms are interfering w/one's quality of life or (2)if the size of the hernia is large enough to lead to bowel incarceration. It sounds like you've answered #1; i advise you to see a hernia surgeon to help answer #2.

Yes: Umbilical hernia is a tear in the umbilicus which is the scar in your abdominal wall from your umbilical cord. They can cause pain and increase in size and trap fatty omental tissue or a piece of bowel and become incarcerated and cause a surgical emergency see a general surgeon and get a hernia repair.

Maybe not: If you have a small hernia that does not contain intestines and is not causing pain, then you may not need surgery right now. The hernia could get larger or cause pain in the future, however, and you would then need surgery. If the hernia bothers you, causes pain, or is getting larger, then see a general surgeon to have it fixed.
