Varies : There are a number of potential causes.  Among the more common are: related to the use of a tourniquet around the time of surgery, related to the peroneal nerve at the fibular head, or even a sciatica from the back among numerous other pisdibilities.  I would make sure your surgeon is aware and follow their recommendations.

Yes, but probably no: I tell all my patients how to protect their knees after surgery often with bracing and/or crutches. My guess is that most fall at some point in the early postoperative period. So you are in good company. It really spends on two things: what exact surgery was performed, and how bad was the fall? You should check with your surgeon to see how concerned he or she is. A quick check alleviates anxiety.

Cosider Alternatives: If the MRI looks good, you may want to try an alternative exercise.  Walking in a pool or trying gentle yoga.  You can go to a therapist that understands alternative treatments.  Changing your diet may help.

should the swelling be gone? i had arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus 2 weeks ago, and my knee is still swollen at times. is that something i should be concerned about?

It : It will usually take a few weeks for the swelling to subside.  If you have some arthritis as well as a meniscus tear it can take longer for the fluid in your knee to be absorbed.  At two weeks post-operation i would not be too worried about having an occasionally swollen knee.

Knee swelling: It is possible you have some persistent irregularity or some arthritis, further tearing, or synovitis /inflammation. Check with doc if still locking for you.

Be seen: I would sure be seen, especially if you have not had problems with shortness of breath before.  It could be as simple as a little fluid overload from the fluids you got in surgery, but a pulmonary embolus from a blood clot is potentially life threatening and has been reported after elective knee surgeries.  Let your surgeon know.

Physical therapy: Follow the instruction of your surgeon and those given to your therapist. The surgeon has actually seen the insides of your knee and what is wrong and what was fixed or not fixxed as well as your prognosis. In addition what you can and cannot do and when to progress.

Right away: You can walk the day of surgery.
Most people will feel good the first day from the local anesthetic and medicine injected at the time of surgery. The medicines wear off by day two and three.  You can still walk but it becomes more sore. By day 3-4 the worst swelling occurs and this is the worst days for some. Usually swelling decreases after this and walking gets better each day after. Keep icing!

Quick Recovery: A sore and swollen knee for a couple days.  Use crutches as needed for the first couple of days.  Use ice readily over the first few days, and start early full range of motion early to reduce swelling and prevent stiffness.  Minimize standing and walking until swelling and pain resolve.  If swelling gone and range of motion normal, normal activities are allowed usually at 4 weeks post-op.
