does sweet oil work for ear aches and should i use it on my 5 yr old sons ear. is it safe? how should i use it? dose size if safe?

I don't: This has been used as a temporary pain control measure over the years. It creates a problem when you don't know what's going on by distorting the appearance of the ear drum when examined later.Simply placing a warm heating pad or compress on the same side of the head works as well &amp; doesn't cause problems.

Yes: You don't tell us your symptoms for needing to put sweet oil in your ear canal. It is safe as long as there is no perforation (hole) in the ear drum. Usually sweet oil or mineral is used to combat dryness and itching.  If you are a q-tip user inside the canal, please stop.

No no no: Unless you are trying to make a salad in your ear keep oil out of your ear. Speaking of salads in your ear there is a role for white vinegar at times. In the case of chronic bacterial or fungal ear canal infections the vinegar can acidify the ear canal. Bacteria and fungus do not do well in the presence of acid like vinegar. As a general rule leave your ear alone. If your ear bothers you see ent.

Maybe External Otiti: If your ear hurts when you manipulate your ear, it is probably external otitis--i.e., infection of the external ear canal, usually caused by a scratch while cleaning.  If so, you may be able to treat it at home by instilling a 50:50 solution of alcohol and vinegar.  The acetic acid in the vinegar kills the bacteria and the alcohol will keep the ear dry.

Whar's an ear ulcer,: exactly? The External Auditory Canal is lined by skin, subject to the same inflammatory diseases as skin elsewhere. The outer 1/3rd is cartilage covered by thick skin. The inner ⅔ rds  is bone covered by thin skin. I'd take her to an otologist, an MD who specializes in diseases of the ear, for accurate diagnosis &amp; treatment. Extra Virgin Olive Oil, a home remedy for pain, doesn't cure anything.

None I recommend: Some self treating mothers use this and other preparations for a variety of things, mostly doing no harm or benefit. Warming it slightly &amp; putting it in the canal can diminish eardrum pain. The same can be done with heat to the side of the head. The adage that you should put nothing in your ear other than your elbow is pretty good advice.

With caution: Several over the counter ear preparations contain oil, usually olive oil.  I would encourage you to make sure your ear drum is intact before placing any drops in the ear.
