Yes: The tonsils and adenoids represent large collections of gland tissue that are often involved with strep infections. After removal of most of those structures there will still be other glandular tissue present that can become infected with strep.

Best discussed with: Best discussed with ENT surgeon.  It depends upon how many days child has been on antibiotics.  Surgery might be rescheduled.

Age?: The usual parameter is over 6 times a year for removal. Also you are at an age where tonsils should be involuting. Practice good oral hygiene and document positive strep screens and get an opinion from your doctor. All the best.

Doctor's evaluation: Tonsillectomies are still performed but much less indicated than before, especially after childhood period, having malignancy in a tonsil for example, or more than 6 or seven documented tonsillitis per year are good indications for surgery among other rare indications, having tonsillar stones alone might not be an absolute indication, check with your doctor/ENT surgeon,

Maybe strep,flu,etc.: Nose and throat symptoms can be from cold viruses, strep throat, allergies, etc... It can be difficult to tell what the cause is. If symptoms only last 1-2 days, it was likely allergies, irritation, or a mild cold. Doctors have rapid 5-minute tests for strep, so a primary care doctor can diagnose strep and start antibiotics "right away", which means within the first 3 days of strep symptoms.

Viral or strep: This could be a viral or strep infection. Have a rapid screening throat culture for strep where you will get an answer within 15 to 30 minutes. If the test is negative and symptoms persist a more accurate routine throat culture can be done with results in 1 to 2 days.

Possible: Best to get checked, as even with a history of a tonsillectomy, you can still get a "strep" pharyngitis 'throat infection.'.
