Clinical exam: Nerve damage causes specific symptoms, and shows on a clinical examination. See your md for an exam, if in doubt they will send you to a neurologist.  Should suspicion of nerve damage be found, electrophysiological tests may be used to confirm. The minor changes seen on xrays and MRI you describe would not cause any nerve damage. If it's a chronic pain situation - read john sarno's book.

: Having degenerative changes in spine at age 20 is unusual. Best you see an orthopedist for exam and co-relation with Xray findings. Hope you feel better.

These joints allow us to twist and to bend forward and backward, and from side to side. Each vertebra has two sets of facet joints. One pair faces upward to connect with the vertebra above and the other pair faces downward to join with the vertebra below.

Yes: they heal but some residual arthritis may result. This situation can be overcome and spine health restored and maintained by regular EXERCISE strengthening the muscles on either side of the spine! Your Primary Care Provider can lead you in  the right direction and perhaps order some PHYSICAL THERAPY after which HOME EXERCISES will maintain a HEALTHY SPINE!

No: no need for any further tests. at this age. regular exercises, good st. posture and back muscle exercises may help.

Not likely: If there is edema at the facet joints, the NSLBP would likely be originating from there, however, if the MRI is normal, the facet joints would not likely be causing your pain

See below: The facet joints are cartilage covered joints that link one vertebrae with another. They guide the motion of the spine. With age they do get more arthritic but do not always cause pain. Pain from facet joints is usually achy and can certainly radiate down into the leg. Usually the pain from facet joints goes into the buttocks, back of the thigh and sometimes to the upper calf. Worse with standing.

See below: The first thing that i usually recommend is physical therapy. This helps in about 6-7/10 cases. When this does not help, there are various interventional procedures for facet joint pain. One is called medial branch radiofrequency treatment which treats the nerves to these joints. They can often provide relief for a year or more but i still like to see people be consistent with exercise.
