Genes &: Having a genetic predisposition to obesity and on top of that depending on fast- food for your nutrition and spending your day in front of a screen is the typical sceen. Worse of all now we are seeing the third generation with this type of behaviour.

2 things: Nutrition and exercise together are the way to preventing obesity in children (and adults).  Kids should eat fresh, healthy, non-processed foods most of the time.  Kids also must be active (really active, not just walking) for an hour a day.  They need to drink water and avoid all sweet liquids (juice, pop, gatorade, chocolate milk, etc.).

Competent parenting: Parents who are scientifically literate, firm, fair and consistent are all that we have in the war on childhood obesity. The fat kid is ridiculed and is set up for a lifetime of emotional and physical problems. I am not optimistic about the effectiveness of government spending or physician exhortation to deal with a problem that has its basis in the privacy of the home; others may disagree.

Though not exclusive to this country, portion size, junk food, targeted food ads to kids, easy fast food, sugar sweetened drinks, less physical activity and more of it sedentary, parental obesity, higher rates of gestational diabetes, etc. Lots of issues to address requiring school, family, medical, food industry, and govt. Support to deal with it.

Only a little: Prior to 1979, pediatric overweight/obesity was at a flat rate of about 5% in the U.S.  It had been at 5% since the records were first kept, beginning in the 1950's.  Starting in 1980 there has been an increase every year, and we are now near 20%.  So it appears that about 5% of kids will be overweight/obese and part of that is genetic.  The rest is related to our lifestyle in this country.
