Avoid....: Organ meats, red meat in general, excessive alcohol, and several other things. Cherry juice helps.  However, even implementing these, in my opinion the effects are modest and result in life-style changes that can be large. Reducing etoh and not-eating organ meats are good ideas unto themselves.  But the majority of people with increased urate: 1/3 under secrete: 1/3 over-produce; and 1/3 both.

Severe gout : Should be evaluated by a doctor. One must realize gout can have effects on your heart and kidney and not only a big toe joint, elbow or pinnacle of ear flare up.

Allupurinol: You should first be evaluated for your gout.  A rheumatologist is the best to evaluate this condition.  There are several medications but the long range medication to prevent acute gouty attacks is allopurinol.

Diet is hard: To treat gout. There are medications like allopurinol or uloric for example. Your doc might want to do a 24 hr urine to see if you are an overproducer or underexcretor of Uris acid and recommend treatment based on result.

Low-purine Diet : Low-purine diets-- i.e., diets low in beans, meat extracts, kidneys, liver, sweetbreads (tripe, menudo, etc), bacon, , turkey, sardines, smelts, herring, anchovies, pheasant, mutton leg, scallops, codfish, haddock, trout, veal, venison, salmon, etc. But, as long as your uric acid is well-controlled (with medicine and the like), you could still potentially consume these types of food in moderation.
