why is a patient not anesthetized during an angioplasty?

Accepted Answer

Not needed: There is no need for genral anesthesia. The procedure is minimally invasive. Most patients are given mild sedation "twilight". Given geenral anesthesia will increase the risk of complications, cost and time or recovery.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Not all cardiologists perform angioplasty and not all cardiologists who do perform angioplasty follow their patients over time. I believe that anyone who has had angioplasty, should see a cardiologist at least once/year to make sure all of the risk factors are being controlled as much as possible.

Probably none: The only problem would be bleeding from the puncture site or a pseudoaneurysm . If the surgeon used a closure device at the puncture site then probably no problem.

Hypertension: High blood pressure in diabetic patients with heart disease needs to be carefully controlled to protect your kidney function, brain, and heart. An ace inhibitor is essential, unless it causes side effects then an arb is an excellent option. There are several meds in these 2 categories. Other BP meds to consider include Coreg (carvedilol) (helps your heart), diuretics, and norvasc. Coordinate meds thru your doc.

Not usually: It would be unusual, we do not allow it in our hospital

Not easy answer: This is a complicated question that depends on many factors, including the anatomy, the location of the coronary lesions, and many other factors. More angioplasy is done these days than bypass.  Your cardiologist should be able to guide you.

Probably not: People who have multiple angioplasties are no more injured by indirect exposure to xray than other people without heart disease.  The degree of harm will depend on how much exposure to xray the individual has had.

Accepted Answer

Fill questionnaire: an angioplasty three years back is not a contraindication for MRI. Before the MRI is done, the technician/nurse or doctor would give you a questionnaire to fill which your father would have to answer. They usually ask if you have any pacemakers or other implants. Also, if the MR is being done with contrast, they might want a recent kidney function test (blood test).
