Different antibiotic: Almost always alternative antibiotics can be used if the infection is resistant to the initial treatment. People are not resistant to antibiotics -- only the bacteria causing the infection can be resistant. Alternatively, maybe the problem is due to a virus, or not from an infection. In these cases, no antibiotic will work. Contact your doctor and follow his or her advice about it.

Depends see below: Very long or lifetime antibiotics are sometimes used for incurable or difficult to cure infections.  Examples are foreign body or hardware infections in which removal is contraindicated.  Treatment of chronic osteomyelitis, treatment of tuberculosis, some fungal infections, nocardia infections etc.

i have recurring bladder infections and am becoming very resistant to all of the antibiotics. are there any alternate remedies for these infections?

Only if it's early: If you are just beginning to feel symptoms, you can try taking cranberry tablets plus vitamin c and a lot of water. And there are over the counter anti-septics like "cystex" which may help. But if your symptoms develop into a full blown infection, then you are past home-remedies, and you need to see a doctor. Often UTIs are related to a vaginal bacterial imbalance. So get checked for that too!

Past overuse: Overuse of common and 3rd level antibiotics for everything from a common  "viral cold" to sore throats have "allowed bacteria to evolve and change their cell walls to resist many antibiotics. The centers for disease control in atlanta has asked physicians to curtail non-indicated antibiotic use for that reason as we are "running out" of new more advanced antibiotics for rx.

: People do not develop antibiotic resistance. Sometimes the germs they acquire in an infection may be antibiotic resistant, but that would be if that germ infected anyone at any time, even if they never took an antibiotic before.  Frequent use of antibiotics for minor colds in which they have no use can eventually cause random germs to mutate &amp; become resistant.

Darwin: Darwin would have predicted this.  Everytime antibiotics are used, a very few number of bacteria survive because they had some random mutation that gave them an advantage.  Eventually, these resistant strains become common and give us things like mrsa.  As we continue to overuse antibiotics, more of this will occur.

Sensitive/resistant: The bacteria tested is susceptible to the antibiotic, norfloxacin but resistAnt to nitrofurantoin  (Macrobid).

Curable, but...: Folliculitis is tiny pustules where the hair follicles are. Typical antibiotics that cure staph and strep infections usually cure folliculitis. If a person is so unlucky to have antibiotic-resistant bacteria causing his folliculitis, he may need more than one antibiotic or a second course of antibiotics. Sometimes, a mild folliculitis (such as hot-tub folliculitis) goes away without antibiotics.

UTI: If someone has a uti, finding out which antibiotics the bacteria is susceptible is very important.  This allows us to use the best antibiotic on the patient.  Using broad spectrum antibiotics or the wrong antibiotics can lead to resistant bacteria which is much harder to kill.  It requires very power antibiotics to kill resistant bacteria and leads to the so called "super bugs"  like MRSA and vre.
