i have been having severe leg pain for 4 days. i have a torn meniscus but lately my tylenol (acetaminophen) #3 not working is there something stronger?

Torn meniscus: Michelle: Meniscal injuries symptoms are often located in the knee joint itself - locking/ giving way, pain when walking, warmth of the joint and so on. You say, the whole leg is in severe pain. You must see your orthopedic physician who can examine your knee and leg. You may require xrays and/or MR exam of the knee or other areas of your leg. can a displaced meniscus root get worse if not operated on? my knee feels so full is can the meniscus tear in the back of the knee?

Generally: Meniscus tears generally do not heal, because the blood supply to the meniscus is very poor. Root tears are at the very edge of the meniscus and are very difficult to manage. You should see and orthopod facile in arthroscopy. Meniscus tears usually cause swelling and pain.

i had my outer meniscus tear repaired and now the inside of my knee kills when i try to run. why is that?

Ortho evaluation now: A thorough examination by your treating surgeon or another orthopaedic surgeon should ascertain the more likely causes of your new onset medial knee pain. An MRI may be indicated to evaluate the status of the repaired lateral meniscus and to gain better detail regarding the internal derangement now potentially present within the medial aspect of your knee. Cartilage or meniscus injury are likely.

my knee popped in the back of the knee now i am having a hard time straightening or bending the knee would this indicate a meniscus tear?

Knee pop/ locked: Could be.Likely at 51 it was frayed before the final tear.  Would consider an MRI  as that is the only way to tell for sure. Treatment  could be a simple as PT, occasional brace unless it does not resolve. F/u/ w/ MD

had meniscus tear repair op 2 months ago. healed well. knee became painful 2 weeks ago. little stiffness no change in range. should i be worried?

Post op meniscus: If u have no swelling nor symptoms of the knee feeling like it is going to lock or give out probably not. If pain and stiffness persist for another 2 weeks go back to your surgeon .

Knee issues.: I can't speak to the part of the knee that is injured. However, patients do sometimes indicate that they have burning pain from meniscal tears. You woul need to be assessed to find out what is wrong with your knee.

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: If an MRI did not show any abnormality of the meniscus or ligaments then it would be very unlikely that you have a tear.  Like everything, there are false positives and false negatives, but a "completely clean" MRI likely means that the answer to your question is no.

Yes, it is possible: 25% of lateral meniscus tears are missed on mri.  It is the job of your treating orthopedic surgeon to correlate MRI findings with your symptoms.  Sometimes surgery is recommended despite relatively negative MRI findings.  On the other hand, your symptoms may have nothing to do with your meniscus.  Popping and buckling are not specific to meniscus problems.

what can be done if a knee mri comes back negative but the patient is still having problems? can a mri miss a medial meniscus tear? please explain

Yes: Yes it can miss about 8-10% of the meniscal lesions, as well chondral lesions are generally missed, rather frequently.
I would advise you to see your orthopod who can examine you and then decide on the diagnosis.

i got an arthroscopic repair of a lateral bucket handle meniscus tear almost four weeks ago. i feel clicking when i bend my knee to 90 degrees and its not on a platform or its not gravity bending the knee. pain is rare. is this a sign of failure?

Unlikely: If your symptom is just clicking, it's unlikely to be a failure of your surgery. You should really get in touch with your orthopedic surgeon if you have any concerns. It's not urgent, but that is what you paid him/her  for.
