For about: 8 weeks, you should avoid fatty or fried foods, until your system gets accustomed to absence of storage capacity of gallbladder.  After that, you should be able to be on unrestricted diet.  Ask your surgeon to be sure.

No restrictions.: After your gall bladder is removed, you really don't have any dietary restrictions.  About 30% of women who have gall bladder removal will have post meal urgency, which is an aggressive urge to have a bowel movement soon after meals.  This is not due to the absence of the gall bladder. It is self limited, but if it persists longer than one likes, try imodium (loperamide). Good luck

Maalox: It is not unusual for patients post-gallbladder surgery to have an issue with bile. Sometimes, bile refluxes into the stomach, causing a significant inflammation called gastritis. The stomach is designed to handle acidity. Bile is a base. The ingredient in maalox and Gaviscon counter-acts bile and usually will improve indigestion. Also, Questran and Colestid (colestipol) are helpful in pts. W/ diarrhea.

Accepted Answer

Depends on symptoms: How were they found?  Why was the test ordered?  If she is having symptoms from her gallbladder (abdominal pains, nausea, vomiting, bloating, indigestion) or abnormal liver blood tests (bili, alk phos, ast, alt) then i would suggest cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal).  If her labs are normal and she has no symptoms, there is minimal risk in waiting.

Accepted Answer

Most likely: Some stones are bilirubin, and one may need to look for causes of the stone and adjust.
Other risk factors, obesity, diet may still need attention to be normal.
The surgery has risks but are low  and most heal just fine.
Most cholecystectomy is done by laparoscopy these days.

No reservoir 4 bile: The gallbladder normally serves to store bile that is made continuously from the liver.  After a meal, the gallbladder contracts, ejecting bile into the intestine, to aid in digestion.  When the gallbladder is removed, the bile no longer is stored but excreted continuously into the intestine.  If there is no food, the bile can be irritating and cause diarrhea.  Over time, this should improve

It doesn't: Removing the gallbladder does not lead to diarrhea , as your bile production has not changed. Some people do develop urgency after gallbladder surgery. That is, about 30-40 minutes after eating the patient has an aggressive need to have bowel movement which may be loose. This is self limited, but can be eliminated with Imodium (loperamide) ad. I allow my patients full dietary intake after surgery. Good luck.

Sort of: After you get your gall bladder out you can usually eat without pain and nausea.  This can lead to eating more!

Bile salt laxative: Gallbladder is a pouch that stores bile for release when fatty foods require digestion. After removal, bile travels through the bile duct from the liver to the small intestine and distally. Some of the bile salts is reabsorbed in the last part of the small intestine. Bile salts have a potent laxative action.
