what is the recovery time after surgery for diverticulitis?

Depends: I have some patients playing golf in 2 weeks, some still call for pain meds after 4 weeks.  In general, uncomplicated laparoscopic resection in the younger, healthier patients will yield the most rapid recovery.  It is not uncommon for my patients to go home after 2-3 days.

is it possible for a diverticulitis rupture with an ostomy bag after surgery?

Possible: It only requires one pocket to leak to cause trouble.  Unless your surgeon resected all diseased segment (not recommended) it is possible to have recurrent infection-even rupture.  When was the surgery? It may be residual infection that will eventually clear.

Not frequent: If stricture develops may be due to recurrences of disease, balloon dilation may help, will require resection for better out come.

Standard : Standard recommendations for the performance of laparoscopic sigmoidectomy in patients with diverticulitis include patients who have complications of the disease or have had numerous, severe disease episodes. Laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy for diverticulitis has demonstrated benefits with regard to operative blood loss, postoperative pain, length of hospital stay, morbidity and mortality compared with open surgical techniques.  In either open or laparoscopic sigmoidectomy, the major complications include: leakage and/or stricture at the anastomosis (connecting the two ends of the colon), abscess, and bleeding (hematoma).

The symptoms associated with the hematoma depend on its size and location.  It is possible that the hematoma is compressing surrounding tissues or organs causing pressure symptoms, or if pressing on a nerve, can also cause neuralgias or pain.   If you are still having symptoms after drainage of the hematoma, you may want to see your surgeon again to have a ct scan done to make sure that the hematoma has been drained and that there are not other reasons (such as infection) for presistent pain or gastrointestinal symptoms.

NOT REALLY: There's no reason for a post colectomy patient to have nausea or dyspepsia, related to the surgery.  I'm assuming you are no longer taking post operative pain medicine. Speak to your doctor. In the meantime , focus on a healthy diet with good hydration. Good luck.

Colectomy: There is some weight loss following major surgeries but patients regain this weight after a while. If you don't you will have to see your doctor as there could be other reasons for weight loss at your age.

Recurrece: Uncommon problem, most  likely recurrence of disease not the scar , need endoscopic  reevaluation for presence of any malignancy'  initial balloon dilatation, if unsuccessful , followed by surgical resection  is required.

May need surgery: Recurrent diverticulitis occurs 10-20% of the time after good operation. Not every bout needs surgery, though. If several recurrent documented bouts (seen on ct scan) then you might need repeat surgery. Pain alone is poor indication.

: It depends on the severity of the previous episodes. If they were managed successfully outpatient, surgery is not absolutely indicated.

Diet and pressure : You are asking about diverticulitis.  The cause is not completely known.  It is known to be an outpouching of the colon and does not contain all layers so it is a pseudo aneurysm.  Diet poor in fiber may contribute.  Pressure exerted may also play a role.  We know that as you age you are more likely to have diverticulitis.  Many people have it but are asymptomatic.
