i was just prescribed ranitidine 300 mg hcl tablets. i have acid reflux with ulcers on my throat. my doctor said i could break them i have trouble swallowing pills. i wanted to know if it was ok to break them?

Yes: It is safe to break up the tablets or to crush them if necessary, as they are not specifically a time release medication.  They are quite bitter so disguising the pieces in apple sauce, etc., would be helpful.

Fine: As long as you get all the medication into your system cutting them in half should not be a problem.

Yes, these: medications are safe and effective when all taken within a 24 hour period of time. Daily.

Heartburn: Changing diet and possibly carafate (sucralfate) may help.  That being said you need to see a GI specialist for an upper endoscopy to rule out Barrett's esophagus or peptic ulcer disease and other things. Hope that helps

H2 - PPI Risk: First of all, I'm not certain why you would be on BOTH lansoprazole and ranitidine. This is a therapeutic duplication
Regarding your question, both drugs are rated Class B, meaning that no birth defects have been reported while taken during pregnancy.  However, this does not rule out that ANY drug use during a pregnancy should be limited to only what is absolutely necessary.

i have gerd and have being having heartburn symptoms. im taking zantac (ranitidine) now daily and i still have heartburn. what medication is best for heartburn?

PPI: Proton pump inhibitor. This class of medications typically works the best for reflux disease. It is advisable over to use this for about three months, and then try and wean yourself off and see how the symptoms are. Do this with the knowledge of your primary care provider. They might need to send you for more tests should medication fail. Hope this helps!

Complications: .Complications of nissan nclude dysphagia, gastric hypersensitivity, abnormal gastric motility, gas bloat syndrome and gerd relapse. The fundoplicaton can fail, unwrap, loosen or herniate. Not unusual following nissan is dumping syndrome. Stomach contents empty fast, getting sudden large volume in small bowel, wrenching, pallor, tachycardia, sweating, diarrhea, cramps etc. See gastroenterologist.

i've been having severe heartburn for the past couple of days. i want to take medication but terrified of side effects. is zantac (ranitidine) or pepcid better?

Heartburn: For classic heartburn, zantac or pepcid gives quicker relief than ppi's such as prilosec or nexium (esomeprazole). It's also helpful to follow a bland,low fat diet and avoid alcohol,caffeine,chocolate and tobacco. I wouldn't expect any significant side effects from zantac or pepcid.
