Safe: As with any procedure an upper GI or endoscopy has it's risks and benefits which should be discussed with your physician. This being said endoscopy is widely performed and very well tolerated. The sedatives used are minimal and safe and the technology has progressed substantially with some centers now offering less invasive nasogastric approaches.

having upper gi done next month to figure out swallowing issues. what can i expect right before, during, and after procedure?

Endoscopy procedure: Before: don't eat/drink for several hours (they'll tell you how many). During: they'll give you a sedative to relax you (you'll be awake, and can follow commands, but very sleepy). They'll numb up your throat with a spray so you won't feel much. They'll give you certain commands to follow that help them perform the procedure. After: you may not remember much. Could have sore throat for a day or 2.

acid reflux symptoms off/on for 5 years.  gi doc says i need endoscopy bad. i'm newly insured. what is the avg cost of the procedure?  how much avg would my out of pocket be?  i have to have this done

Good luck with that: Medical billing is a nightmare! no one here will be able to answer your question. There's too much variation in pricing & in insurance coverage. Your best bet is to call your insur carrier 1st & ask what your costs would be, either as a % of total or as a deductible you have to meet, & then call the doctor's office & ask the cost (realize that the facility & anesthesiologist will bill too).

had colonoscopy 11/19/19. gi doc found asymmetric prostate w/o nodule. yearly physical in jan showed .47 psa. since it was noted by gi doc during procedure, is it something i should be concerned about? never heard of asymmetric prostate w/o nodule

Asymmetric prostate: Appears to be a rather benign variant with no clear correlation with prostate cancer. The presence of a nodule is believed to be associated with a higher risk for cancer. Best would be to discuss findings with your PCP and see if establishing with an urologist for surveillance would be appropriate.

can gi doctor treat a bleeding rectal prolapse during sigmoidoscopy procedure to stop the bleeding?

Accepted Answer

: When rectum loses the normal attachments that keep it fixed inside the body, allowing it to slide out through the anal opening turning it inside out. Mucosal exposure to air causes sloughing, ulceration and bleeding. Gastroenterologist can reposition rectum in its normal position albeit temporarily and symptoms may improve. Definitive treatment will need a colorectal surgeon. Hope it helps.

been dealing with gut issues on and off for a few years. got worse. saw a gi specialist telling me egd and colonoscopy is necessary. with my health anxiety, idk if i can sit with this calmly. procedure booked a month out. any tips on how to keep calm?

: I recommend having cognitive behavioral therapy. Also look into meditation, muscle relaxation therapy and breathing exercises. All these modalities are excellent for relieving various types of anxiety.  I'd ask your primary care physician to refer you or you could call the department of psychiatry at a university hospital near you and make some inquiries.

upper gi surgeon did abdo/pelvic mri & it has found simple cyst on left kidney. does this require any treatment or procedure?

Accepted Answer

No: Simple cysts are almost always benign and are quite common in the kidney and liver. No treatment or biopsy needs to be done unless the cyst is very large and pressing on other organs.

having an upper gi endoscopy done in the afternoon 3pm.(dysphagia?)  last meal was last night at 9pm.  only clear liquids this morning, but my stomach/throat full (slow digestion?).  is this a problem for the procedure.

No: It should not be if you had no solid food.

had upper gi endoscopy to check for lesions. could any dangerous entities (other than h. pylori infection)...have been missed? 
i had been taking nexium (ppi) up to the day before procedure (allowed by gastroenterologist)

Followup w ur doctor: generally w/o  lesions, biopsies not taken unless symptoms or history (e.g. of ulcer) warrant  including ruling out H pylori. however given ur age  (esp prolonged nexium use), if severity warrants, discuss w ur doctor re diet and life style changes to decrease symptoms of reflux (if indeed reason for nexium) and rule out reversible esp causes if stomach symptoms - happy to consult further.
