i used polysporin eye drops and my eyes seem to hurt and get redder, do i even have an eye infection? my symptoms today were some white discharge

Could be allergic: You could have an allergy to either the antibiotic polysporin or the preservative.  I would suggest stopping the medicine, using a drop of artificial tear (Systane Balance, HypoTears, Tears Naturale or generic) 4 times a day for 3 days and if no better see an eye care specialist

why does my conjonctivitis seems to get worse (itching, pain) when i put polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) eye drops?

Chemical irritation : Polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) (ophthalmic preparation) may be irritating if used beyond 7 to 10 days, or if you are sensitive to any of the ingredients. Also, you may have been prescribed an antibiotic for the wrong problem, as in viral conjunctivitis or allergic conjunctivitis. Discuss with your prescribing physician your symptoms, as you may need to stop the polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) drops and be treated with a different product.

not 100 percent sure if i have pink eye should i use the polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) eye drops or could it damage my eye?

Possibly: If your eye gets red but 1)the vision is ok and 2)there is no pain or pus, then you can try the polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) which is a good antibiotic.  If the problem persists (take out your contacts if you are wearing them), then see your ophthalmologist.

Probably none: You simply will have diluted the concentration of the active ingredients by the amount of mix that you have made.  There is nothing incompatible in these solutions.

See eye doctor to: evert your lid and see what's under there that's causing a problem. They have all the equipment to do a thorough job, and you'll have permanent relief.

See physician: Whenever an eye infection is not responding to treatment within a couple days, it's important to see an eye specialist. Sometimes this indicates a serious viral infection or a resistant bacterial infection that could cause damage to the eye. Also possibility of allergy or sensitivity reaction to the drops being used. Contact your physician to be reexamined or referred.

yes: If you have been prescribed polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) drops  for some problem, you can do that.  However it is always safer if the eye is infected to not wear the contact lens in that eye until the infection is gone.

Not usually: Most 'pink eye" is viral and polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) is a good anti-bacterial which will probably do no harm but will not affect  viral infection.

Not necessarily: Any eyedrop can potentially cause some burning and stinging when instilled in the eyes, particularly if the eye is irritated or inflamed to begin with.

i believe i scratched it. i bought polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) antibiotic drops. will that hurt or help?

Accepted Answer

Be Careful: If it is a minor scratch, meaning not too big or deep, then it should heal in a few days using those drops every few hours. However, if your vision is compromised or the pain increases, or you get sensitive to the light, or a discharge starts then you should go to a doctor immediately. Don't take any chances with your eyes. You don't need to wear an eye patch. Avoid bright lights or a lot of TV.
