The : The prophy paste is a special cleansing agent dentists and hygienists use to remove the plaque and stain from teeth.  This contains a fine abrasive material and flavorings.  It is manufactured to be used by these professionals with special equipment.  Prior to the prophylaxis the teeth are scaled (scraped) to remove the calculus (tarter) which is nothing more than calcified plaque.

The prophy paste should not be used by untrained individuals or used on a weekly basis because it is too abrasive.  Discuss with your dentist what tooth paste is right for you.

Baking : Baking soda is found in many toothpastes. It is a base, which neutralizes the acids that the bacteria clinging to your teeth produce. It is also slightly abrasive which helps you remove some of the superficial stains. Moderate use with a soft bristle brush should not be detrimental to your teeth or surrounding tissue.

Brushing excessively hard, and overusing such an abrasive, can, over time cause a wearing away of the enamel on your teeth. Also, brushing hard can cause your gums to shrink back, exposing the roots of the teeth. The root surface will wear away much faster than the enamel, which can lead to hot and cold sensitivity.

my dentist filed down the central incisors and polished twobottom front teeth. the weight of my mouth feels off and the front and bottom teeth don't touch. why is my jaw and facesore?

Wait: It may take some time for your joints to accommodate the minor changes made (assuming they were minor adjustments to your teeth).  If you're still noticing this difference to be way too much in 3 weeks i'd make an appointment to see your dentist.

Visually or x-ray: A dentist can visually see a crack or take an x-ray to verify a crack. Sometimes by symptoms such as the tooth hurts only on chewing can verify a vertical fracture which does not show up on an x-ray.
