is mild persistent asthma really all that dangerous?

Think of a cliff: Asthma is a potentially life threatening disease.In spite of advances in therapy, yearly death rates are relatively stable. Mild persistent asthma is worthy of your respect and efforts to improve, so you don't  become a statistic, one whose flare up ended in a fatality.The better you can get your control, the further away from the cliff you are and less likelihood of falling off.

my 19mo was diagnosed with mild persistent asthma, she coughs in am, when runs, etc, does she always need nebulizer or is there inhaler/quicker way?

Maybe: At 19 months, she is unlikely to be able to use an inhaler properly, as she cannot coordinate her breathing.  You should ask your doctor for an inhaler version of her nebulizer medication, and a spacer, which is a plastic tube that you fit the inhaler into one end, and have her breathe several breaths from the other.

i left my mild persistent asthma uncontrolled for 2 years and it got increased to moderate persistent which i poorly controlled for one year but the inhaler i used is foracort 400 twice a day had minimum effect . will my airways got remodelled?

: It is a fancy word- but remodeling can and does occur in many conditions

spo2 drops to 80% when eating only, is this normal? i am a pt. with mild persistent asthma & cad?

Accepted Answer

: Peoples breathing rate varies depending on the activity they are doing. During eating, we can breathe less due to chewing and swallowing. If you are concerned, take a few deep breaths and remeasure. Most of the time, the SPO2 will go back up. It is not indicative of any problem if it is only for small periods of time. Persistent measurements under 94% or shortness of breath would be a worry.

Asthma: You should be under the care of an internist familiar with asthma control as well as your iron deficiency.

can bronchitis really last this long. started as the flu now bronchitis.  finishing 3rd round of anti biotics and steroids. still coughing up junk. have severe persistent asthma. how long does this take to completely heal and my asthma to calm down.?

Inflammation: It may takes weeks to months to recover. The mucus should be sent for culture, since secondary bacterial infection may occur. An asthma action plan including pulmonary function testing and a chest image is advised. A virtual consultation may be useful to you and your PCP. Inflammatory changes may be treated with steroids and a LABA/ICS combination may be used to treat uncontrolled symptoms.

i was dx with persistent asthma and suffer pneumothorax. however, after literature  reviews, cannot surmise the mechanism for lack of wheezing. ideas?

More information : It would be helpful to review your history during an inbox consult. You can upload images and lab data. A pulmonary function test with and without bronchodilator maybe informative. Have you had a follow up chest radiograph?

Talk to doctor: How do you find out she has moderate persistent asthma?  If indeed it is, she will likely need a controller drug with an inhaled steroid +/- a long-acting bronchodilator or Singulair (montelukast).   Since every asthma case is different, this should be monitored by your doctor and not by self-treatment.

i've had persistent coughing and postnatal drip for several months. i have asthma but am not on routine meds. should i be?

Likely need medicine: Symptoms of persistent cough and post-nasal drip could be related to asthma, allergies or even indigestion/reflux. Recurrent coughing (esp at night) associated with shortness of breath is worrisome for asthma - the most likely diagnosis (dx) esp if there is prior known history of asthma. Allergic cause more likely if itchy eyes, sneezing - but often coexists with asthma. Need to see MD for dx/med.
