No: Pth is a hormone secreted by the parathyroid glands. It is supposed to be secreted in response to low serum calcium. It works by increasing kidney resorption of calcium, breaking down bone, and increasing absorption from the gut. If you have a high calcium and pth, the most common cause is a parathyroid adenoma (benign tumor) that secretes pth. It is different from hypo or hyperthyroidism.

Remaining parathyroi: It sounds like you had a parathyroid adenoma removed because of hyperparathyroidism.  Typically this is a problem of one parathyroid.  You have 3 others that will function fine after removal of the overactive one.  Calcium levels which were high, should return to normal and stay normal.

You will improve: Criteria have been established when to operate on an overactive parathyroid. It is recommended for all under age 50 as well as older people with bone loss, a very high calcium and those with kidney stones. Generally this is due to one overactive gland which is removed and the remaining 3 glands will allow the blood calcium to remain in the normal range. Many people have less fatigue afterwards.

Easy to test for: Hi. The key things to test for are: blood calcium, blood phosphate, kidney function, vitamin D levels, PTH, and 24-hour urinary calcium. If your blood calcium, urinary calcium, &amp; PTH are high, you have primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT). If blood calcium is low or normal and PTH is high, you have secondary HPT. If blood calcium and PTH are low, you have hypoparathyroidism. Kidney disease caveats.
