A member asked:

How important is your parathyroid? where a parathyroidectomy is recommended due to high calcium.. how will you function without parathyroid?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

You will improve: Criteria have been established when to operate on an overactive parathyroid. It is recommended for all under age 50 as well as older people with bone loss, a very high calcium and those with kidney stones. Generally this is due to one overactive gland which is removed and the remaining 3 glands will allow the blood calcium to remain in the normal range. Many people have less fatigue afterwards.
