i have a bulging disc in my spine that can be quite painful.  am i going to be able to have a baby?

Back problems: A bulging disc can cause more pain during pregnancy as your body changes and the low back curves inward to compensate for a growing belly. Women with disc issues will often need to discuss epidurals with an anesthesiologist prior to labor in order to sure one can be done. There are other pain management options as well. The disc itself will not usually be a reason to avoid a vaginal delivery.

Back problems: These symptoms are usually self-limited and should resolve with conservative treatment, including heat or ice, anti-inflammatory medications, muscle relaxants, daily stretching and walking. If this has been going on longer than 6-8 weeks see your doctor to make sure there isn't something more serious going on.

Bulging discs: There are 7 vertebral bodies in the neck (cervical spine), 12 in the mid back (thoracic spine), and 5 in the low back (lumbar spine). Between each vertebral body is a disc made of cartilage.  When discs begin to show signs of degeneration or arthritis, they bulge and can lead to mild to moderate narrowing of the spine. Nonoperative treatment is usually the first line of therapy.

Aging spine: No you will not. The presence of degenerative changes and / or buldging disks is not uncommon as we grow older. In fact the changes which are  often identified on imaging like MRI studies rarely result in symptoms.   In some cases symptoms may develop or persist to the point surgery may become necessary. Certainly smokers healer less readily compared to non smokers.

NonE: It is not at all clear there is a cause and effect between discomfort and the prescence of bulges on images many painless necks have bulges  of their discs.

High: Bulging discs are typical in the aging spine and often start showing up in patients in their thirties. By the time people reach 40 years old the majority will have some bulging discs. If you do and MRI of your lumbar spine you will probably have more bulging discs there.

You have a complex: case and need to be under medical management during your weight loss to document your symptoms as you lose weight since you've had significant trauma to your spine, and possibly be in pain. Usually it's safer to lose 5 pounds/month up to 10 pounds, but 4 pounds a week may be difficult as your overexercising could put strain on your body.So discuss this with your doctor first to see the safest way.

Minor bulging: This means that any back or leg symptoms you have are unlikely to require surgical or injection treatment and may have nothing to do with your minor bulging discs.  Very many people who have mri's show some bulging of discs. A neurosurgeon or spine clinic could advise you best,however.
