Different exercise: Sorry about your pain.  Most important is to maintain form; correct body axis so as not to strain accessory muscles.  May want to put a band around both knees to keep them positioned during exercise and while seated; don't splay your legs.  Also place a ball or towel under the knee on a bed and push down with the knee; then use the ball/towel as a fulcrum and raise the foot.  If needed use weights

See below: Sit and bend your knee back and forth as well as tightly bend in---if it doesn't hurt then try crossing your legs and place your ankle above the opposite knee.  Then apply pressure to the leg that is cross and if it is your hip that can reproduce the pain.

Primary care: I suggest that you start with a primary care physician. They can do the preliminary exam and testing and decide what is the best referral. For example, you may need physical therapy, orthopedics or rheumatology. Your primary care provider is the best one to sort this out.

Ugly squats hurt: Sorry, that title seems harsh, but more than likely, when one has knee pain when squatting or lunging, it is due to poor form.  The exercise must be done properly, with your weight shifted to the rear of the feet.  When you bend the knees, the knees should be directly above the ankles, not in front of them (or to the right or left), and do not bend the knees past 90 degrees.

A locked knee with a torn and dislodged meniscus may require arthroscopic surgery. Anterior knee pain from going up and down stairs usually responds to physical therapy.
