I've been having a weird pain in my knees when rising from a deep squat. is there an easy way to distinguish knee pain from referred hip pain?

See below: Sit and bend your knee back and forth as well as tightly bend in---if it doesn't hurt then try crossing your legs and place your ankle above the opposite knee. Then apply pressure to the leg that is cross and if it is your hip that can reproduce the pain.

Knee vs. hip: Hip pain is felt in the groin and buttock, and then deep in the thigh down to the knee. Getting up from a chair will cause hip pain due to increased pressure in the joint. Sitting with the knees bent for a long time (ie movie theater), knee motion, and squatting aggravates knee probs. If knees hurt but hips don't, probably knees.
