Ugly squats hurt: Sorry, that title seems harsh, but more than likely, when one has knee pain when squatting or lunging, it is due to poor form. The exercise must be done properly, with your weight shifted to the rear of the feet. When you bend the knees, the knees should be directly above the ankles, not in front of them (or to the right or left), and do not bend the knees past 90 degrees.
