Likely infection:  This could be a viral or a bacterial infection.  Any fever? Any cough. If throat pain is severe &amp; if tonsils are significantly swollen may want to get checked for Strep throat. Mononucleosis can present with swollen glands.  It might even be a less typical expression of COVID. Consider  a consult with your doctor.

i ate a very hot spoonful of food, and i swallowed it. now i feel pain in the back of my throat and esophagus. should i be concerned?

: The delicate mucus membranes of the mouth and esophagus are easily inflamed with excessively "hot food", and the pain from this will quickly resolve usually,  but if still sore in a couple days, get a referral to an ENT specialist.

i'm having difficulty breathing with my mouth and i feel pain in the back of my throat. what symptoms are these?

Sore throat: You could have tonsillitis or something more serious if you are having trouble breathing and more than a little trouble swallowing.  You need to be checked.

i'm on day 8 after my tonsillectomy. i have a very sharp pain in the back of my throat whenever i swallow. is this the scabs? how can i help this?

Need follow up: If you are still having sharp pain 8 days after the surgery, it may still be okay, however a follow up to check for infection or complications of surgery is needed.

i am having problems wearing my clear retainer aligner. ever since i have been wearing it, i keep having pain in my throat and whenever i swallow my own spit, i feel a sharp pain in the back of my throat gum. does aligner cause this?

: In the begging ,patients get excessive salivation and pain in teeth which might look like difficult to swallow the saliva but gradually it improves .
If within a week of wearing the Aligner , the condition does not improve, you must see your Dentist for adjustment .
In the mean time ask your Dentist to prescribe pain medication before you see him/her

Sore throat: This could be a number of different things such as bacterial infection, fungal infection, reflux disease or something else. You should get in to see an ENT specialist and get evaluated. Good luck!

i had a cavity filled 8 months ago and my cheek under my eye is still a little swollen. he had to shoot pain killer in the back of my throat.  norm?

No: The most common infected tooth that causes cheek and eye swelling is the upper canines.  These teeth are not anesthetized with injections at the back of the throat.  Eight months is way to long to be waiting for an infection and swelling to go down.  See your dentist  immedietly.

See your MD: You need to be sure it is not strep throat.
See your MD a rapid test can be done to rule it out and if needed antibiotics can be prescribed at the same time

This could be a: Viral infection, strep throat, yeast etc. Med eval would help to differentiate. For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes –  see physician ; get a strep throat test/ culture. If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm &gt;.

most strep throat symptoms are gone so cna i go back to work?

Accepted Answer

?Treated?: You are not considered contagious for strep after you have been on antibiotics for 24 hours. Your employer may of may not have other requirements, but this is the basic issue I use for clearing a patient to get back to work.
