Stiffness: Keeping your hand or wrist in a cast too long can increase the stiffness in your joints, and then make it harder to regain full motion.

See doctor: There will be some discomfort as healing takes place.  But if you are following  the instructions you were given and the pain is increasing then call the doctor and get it checked.

Accepted Answer

No: Casts are designed to immobilize fractures and thereby lessen the pain. You will continue to have some pain at the fracture site but pain elsewhere or increasing pain should be brought to the attention of the surgeon. One common resaon for increasing pain is swelling because the hand is not elevated enough.

Accepted Answer

Yes: It takes a few days after fracture for swelling to start to decrease. The pain from a fracture gradually diminishes as the fracture begins to heal and become stable. Until then ther may be some pain at the fracture due to the normal muscle paul on the fracture fragments.  If the pain is unchanged for a couple of weeks, see your doctor.

Cast saw: A cast saw is used to split the cast. It is a vibratory saw that will only cut hard material and avoids potential of cutting patient. The cast is then spread at the cuts and the padding is divided to remove the cast.

Suprisingly a cast : Is often lighter than you think,  less than a pound often. But it is inconvenient at times, weight that you may not be sued to holding all the time and often the part that the cast is on is not being utilized normally. Gentle elevation while sleeping woth apilow on the chest often hels swelling which can also make th hand feel "heavy"
slings are ok but be careful that a sling is not overused.

Not effective: Over the counter splints give rise to some support and protection and work well for overuse and soft tissue inflammatory injuries. However a fracture requires reduction, either open or closed, and then a well molded cast applied by the treating physician. Casts are fabricated specifically for the injury or fracture being treated.

Leave on: Cast is necessary to maintain position of fracture to allow it to heal properly do not remove the cast. Do not stick anything down inside the cast can cause infection, do not spray anything into the cast.

Oil of wintergreen: We use this in foul smelling cases on our masks.  Usaually we just change the cast in the office.  Some of my patients live 3 hours away and this might help rather than drive 6 hours round trip to get a cast change.  This could also be an indicator of infection if there is a would so talk with your doctor.

Not necessarily: It depend what fracture you have and were the fracture located, some require hand cast some are not.
