Not effective: Over the counter splints give rise to some support and protection and work well for overuse and soft tissue inflammatory injuries. However a fracture requires reduction, either open or closed, and then a well molded cast applied by the treating physician. Casts are fabricated specifically for the injury or fracture being treated.
