Sure: Drink lots of water. Prevent and treat any constipation. avoid spicy foods. Use Witch Hazel Tucks (witch hazel). Try over the counter Preparation H and Hydrocortisone cream If it doe snot help, see a doctor.

for the past few weeks, i've had to strain and been in pain after passing stool, i feel like i can't empty out all the way i have cramps and mucus in stool, i've tried laxatives and enema .. my mom passed from colon cancer so i'm a little concerned?

: Your symptoms, though not so uncommon, are also not specific enough to give a definite diagnosis.  You could suffer from issues in the GI tract such as irritable Bowel syndrome, Chrohn's, Ulcerative colitis, infection or others.  However, since you do have a family history of colon cancer (Your mom), I would seek the opinion of a gastroenterologist, who would likely suggest a colonoscopy.

Fissure/constipation: Your symtoms could be seconadry to anal fissure or hemrrhoids

high fiber diet  ( more then 25gm /day ) with otc stool softner like sodium docuaste should help in making your stools soft . If you have no relief with teh above measures then you should see your pcp sometimes  we need the help of rectal steroid preperations to help with the inflammation.

Check with GI doc: First question is his age and has he had a colonoscopy. Pain can be from hemorrhoids or something more serious so I would check in with doctor, or gastroenterologist if he has one.

Variable: colon, diverticulitis, other may cause symptoms. Needs work up, colonoscopy and end.
AAA usually does not.

?  Anal Fissure?: If you have an anal fissure it may take 4 to 6 weeks to heal. Do warm water bathtub soaks x 20 minutes 3 x /day.  Hydrate well with water, increase dietary fiber & consider use of stool softeners /laxatives until your painful bowel movements resolve.  Medications may be indicated if this condition becomes chronic. See your doctor for further assessment.

Difficult BM's: Drink adequate amounts of fluids daily and eat good amounts of fiber found in bran cereals, vegetables,salads and fruits and/or take metamucil daily. For very sluggish bowels, a daily stool softener like colace helps but some people need a gentle stimulant like senokot (senna). If you have the urge and can't move, insert a glycerin rectal suppository or, if needed, a dulcolax rectal suppository to empty..

Pruritis Ani dx & tx: Pruritis ani is an annoying itching, sometimes with burning, soreness, worse at night, in 1-5% of people (4x likelier in males). Treatment depends on causes: infection (fungal, parasitic, bacterial, std), local irritants (moisture, soaps, diet, drugs), dermatitis (psoriatic, atopic, seborrheic), cancer, hemorrhoids, fissures, fistulae, rectal prolapse, fecal contamination (diarrhea, incontinence).

Rectal bleeding : There are many possible causes of rectal bleeding. If he is constipated and straining to pass stool, he might have hemorrhoids.  But it is essential that he have a rectal exam by a qualified health professional as other causes need to be ruled out. You should have him inform doctor if he has pain, itching, mucus in stool, blood separate or mixed inside stool etc.

May be normal: I assume your baby is a newborn or very young infant. Many a newborn especially breast fed would show this pattern for some time in earlier days of their life. As long as the baby is feeding well, growing normally, the physical exam and inspection of the stool by his/her pediatrician is normal, and especially if you are nursing you may not have any thing to worry about.
