ADHD is diagnosed by: clinical criteria of 6/9 or &gt; significant symptoms of Inattention +/- Hyperactivity /Impulsivity that caused harmful dysfunction at home &amp; school for 6 mos. or &gt; by age 10, even if ADHD-Primarily Inattentive Type was not diagnosed in childhood. There are no biological markers; neuropsychological deficits found in people with ADHD are also found in people with other Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

On-line tests = junk: Don't believe a test you took on line. You need to be evaluated by a licensed psychologist or physician for such a diagnosis. I also noticed that you are 48 years old. If you didn't have a history of ADHD as a child it is unlikely that you have one now. I hope that helps clear things up. :)

Hello. : Hello. The connor's inventory is often used. Input is illicited from the parents, the child's teachers and the child. The child is observed. Report card comments are often reviewed for comments and trends. Psychological testing can be helpful. The diagnostic and stastistical manual of psychiatry lists the diagnostic criterion that need to be met in order to diagnose attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd).

Yes: The features of ADHD overlap with those of other health conditions. The common treatments also include drugs monitored closely by the government as drugs of abuse. So at minimum you need to see your physician to exclude any other health conditions &amp; establish a true need for treatment. Online tests can point out the possibility but don't establish a diagnosis. Unlikely if you weren't as a kid.

No: There is no objective test for adhd. The diagnosis is made from a checklist of subjective symptoms. That is why I do not consider it a real medical diagnosis. When i look for the underlying medical or educational cause of the adhd symptoms and treat them, most of the time, they resolve.

Certainly: Any medication that is strong enough to do good is strong enough to do bad. Side effects can and do injure patients every year. The need for or benefit from any ADD medication is very individualized, but most with true ADD benefit from these stimulant meds. You can have other problems at the same time, &amp; medical treatment requires fine tuning, usually by an experienced psychiatrist.
