Depending on what they do, they may have a duty to inform your employer of safety risks that you may pose to yourself and others due to certain medical conditions that you have.  For example, if you have a cdl and you develop diabetes and take insulin, and the occ med doc finds out, they are required to inform your employer of this.

Depends what: You are going for. The first visit you should expect a thorough history and physical exam, focusing more so on musculoskeletal issues, such as a strength and function. Beyond that, it would depend what you are seeing this type of physician for as they each treat a broad set of issues and patients.

Most pm&r speicialists (physicatrist) specialise in particular disorders such as spinal cord or brain injury, nerve injury or musculosckeletal injury, or occupational health, or children's physical problems.

Difficult decisions: I don't know the work you do - but if there is risk of injury to yourself, others or the work itself - I certainly understand how bad this is. Most folk can't easily afford to risk jobs or even a day's pay and that makes it harder. If you have a HR dept or a union, I'd contact them for guidance. If your supervisor is good, that's also a possibility. I wish things were different - sorry!

Medication prescribe: Typically licensed practitioners who are able to prescribe medications if they are  not physicians (M.Ds, D.Os, dentists, podiatrists etc, ) are either licensed practical nurses or physician assistants.  This varies depending on your jurisdiction, some requiring or not physician supervision typically from mds or dos.  I have never heard of occupational or physical therapist prescribing medications.

Work injuries : Common work injuries are low back strain with muscle spasms and general muscular strains/sprains for repetitive or other overuse injuries. Lacerations and contusions do occur frequently along with occasional burns. Lung diseases are common in certain industries.
