24 day old newborn vomits roughly 2 - 3 times daily on a diet of breast milk and formula, the vomiting occurs after feeding from breast and bottle. there are no signs of blood in the vomit. this has been happining for about 1 week?

GERD: Sounds like normal baby spit-up. If baby is growing and gaining weight well, a happy and content baby and not having any respiratory problems such as cough or wheezing that could be caused by reflux, i wouldn't worry about it. Less likely is baby has a sensitivity to cow's milk in the formula. If symptoms worsen or baby not gaining weight,  consider alternative formula - talk to your pediatrician

is the novalac range to strong for my newborns stomach? he's been spitting up small amounts after feeding sometimes and then he's vomited up his formula twice in the space of a week.  he acts like he's starving every 2 to 3 hours so i feed him.

Normal: Newborns commonly feed at 2-3 hour intervals. A little spitting up after feeds can be minimized by slowing the rate at which you feed him. Feed one ounce, then stop and holding him upright put him over your shoulder and burp him well. repeat this until finishesd. Keep him upright after feeding for at least 30 minutes to prevent vomiting or large spit ups. Your Dr may suggest changing formula.

my newborn keeps being sick after a feed , mostly it is milk but it has been yellow a few times and he is slightly under weight.is this normal ?

Yes: Would make sure he has been burped well and hold him upright for 30 minutes after his feed. Follow his voiding and stooling closely. If he is not peeing and pooing then you should have him checked at the doctor. 
If it is projectile(across the room) or pine green i would have him evaluated immediately.

can you tell me what to do for newborns throwing up after feeding and it coming thru nasal passages and choking baby?

Clear the nose: Babies don't have good control when they vomit and the fluid can come out the nose or mouth. Clear his nose with the bulb syringe. You may be able to prevent some of the vomiting or spitting up by burping frequently, don't overfeed him, and hold him upright for a while after feeding to allow the feeds to settle.

It gets easier with: Time to interpret your baby's cries. Unfortunately, when babies cry they swallow air. The smooth muscle of the intestine isn't synchronized yet to pass the air out. If baby seems  gag when starting to nurse, he may need a burp. I'll ask my arabic-speaking daughter to help explain the " football hold" or "colic carry" to you to help baby pass gas.  When all else fails, allow your baby to self-calm.

NO: If your baby is vomiting with feedings, see your pediatrician immediately. If she is just spitting up a little, then acting fine, and wants to eat again at the next feeding time, don't worry too much. But if she is vomiting her milk or having trouble feeding, she should see her doctor NOW. She could have an obstruction or infection which could be serious.

CHOI: Newborn vomiting is serious. You live in a city with a fantastic Children's Hospital - Children's Hospital of Illinois. You go there to the ER now. A newborn who is truly vomiting could have intestinal obstruction from guts turned the wrong way, could have infection, could have food intolerance. Some things not so serious, some things deadly. Don't play guessing games - hours matter here!

Safest Methods: Recent studies suggest reflux meds are often prescribed too early/often. Initially try safe reflux precautions: elevate head of bed, don't overfeed-and possibly consider smaller volume feeds more frequently, thicken formula by adding 1/4 less water to powder formula mix, avoid aggressive burping, feed and keep more upright 30 min after feeds. See md if pain, not feeding and not gaining weight.

ER- noe: Possible pyloric stenosis, abdominal infection or bowel obstruction. Go to ER immediately.
