Thanks....!: I to have donated a kidney and am overweight. Your remaining kidney I assume has normal function, so you don't need to worry about any thing in particular avoiding in your diet because of only one kidney. SO lose weight the old fashioned way. Drink lots of water (60-80 ounces a day), lots of fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, no simple sugars and modest protein intake. Exercise consistently!

Nephrectomy : A urologist is the surgical specialist of the kidney and a nephrologist is the medical specialist of the kidney. So a urologist would remove a kidney.

my gfr is 48, creatinine 1.20 does someone with these numbers always need to see a kidney doctor?

Accepted Answer

It depends: GFR estimates from spot creatinines are subscientific. The foolishness only begins with the automatic, arbitrary adjustment for race "because black people are more muscular than white people." When I was lifting weights daily, my creatinine ran 1.6 to 1.8 and I was perfectly healthy. Ask whether you can be re-tested off ibuprofen etc. before a consult is requested.

how am i getting kidney issues when i did nothing to destroy them, im in stage 3 and have to see a kidney doctor, i dont drink, never smoked, never done drugs, i rarely drink a soda, used to yrs ago but quit, so why all these kidney issues, im 60?

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. If you have high blood pressure that may be the cause. Please note that stage 3 is not too severe and  it would be prudent to see a doctor, preferably a kidney doctor, nephrologist.

Lab tests: Although there are clinical signs of kidney failure including swelling, high blood pressure, and other signs including loss of appetite, the most reliable diagnosis of kidney failure requires laboratory testing. Specifically the blood is tested for blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels. The urine may also be tested for abnormal proteins and the presence of red or white blood cells.

: Would NOT start taking iron tablets on own before seeing your kidney dr.  Doing so could could impair the correct diagnosis. Deficiency can be from low intake of iron or it's required co-nutrients (folate, B-12, etc), from medical conditions/diseases, from increased loss of iron (microscopic blood loss from stomach or colon), or reduced EPO from kidneys.

creatinine was high on my last two labs.  i'm going to see a kidney doctor for it. i'm always dehydrated, what are possibilities?

Several: You may have an interstitial nephritis from illness or medication preventing you from concentrating urine. Your Accutane may make you feel dry. If you're well-muscled, this may explain high creatinine -- when i was lifting daily, i ran 1.7 mg/dl. If you do take Ibuprofen or similar meds, drink plenty of water. A majority of these consults result in reassurance but let's be certain.

i found out the reason why i couldnt take metformin was cause something showed up on my bloodwork from my kidney doctor,is it possible i had too much acid built up on my kidneys cause of it? im seeing her monday but just wondered if thats possible?

: Metformin is not usually used in patients with impaired kidney function. The impaired function shows as elevated levels of urea and creatinine in blood, not acid accumulation on kidneys.
