How does a kidney doctor diagnose kidney failure?

Lab tests: Although there are clinical signs of kidney failure including swelling, high blood pressure, and other signs including loss of appetite, the most reliable diagnosis of kidney failure requires laboratory testing. Specifically the blood is tested for blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels. The urine may also be tested for abnormal proteins and the presence of red or white blood cells.
