my knee hurts with shooting pains and it clicks when i walk up stairs. what can this be?

Tracking Disorder: All joints can make noise. If the noise hurts, that may indicate a problem. Most people without a history of trauma and pain with stairs is usually a patellar tracking disorder. The knee cap can rub against the femoral groove when going up/down stairs causing inflammation and pain. This is often resolved with consistent rehab. You should see a sports medicine specialist or an orthopedist.

while going down the stairs, my knee slid down two steps. i had to walk home, my knee hurts when i bend it, go up the stairs, and when i sit down. i put an ice pack and my ankle hurts too. what can i do? how do i know if it's a serious injury?

Knee injury: There are several possibilities including sprain to torn meniscus (often from trauma).  Please see your doctor who can provide a diagnosis and treatment if needed.  Peace and good health.

right acute knee pain, burning and bruise- like feeling. whole kneecap is worse, along its bottom. stairs are very difficult to use, and it hurts any time i walk. had a negative x- ray.

Patellofemoral pain: Your symptoms suggest patellofemoral pain;the cartilage underneath your kneecap may be thinning or damaged and causes pain in the kneecap region, esp. W/stairclimbing, squats, lunges etc.Keeping the knee bent for a period of time can be uncomfortable.Isometric quad strengthening, hamstring stretching, nsaids and patellar stabilizing sleeve can be helpful.See ors if sx's persist.Gl!

i get really bad knee pain and it gets really hard to walk up stairs or move things around. i exercise and stretch im only 19 is there something wrong?

Something wrong: You need to see your primary doctor. If he/she can help you that's fine. If not you will be referred to a joint specialist. Have your doctor refer you.

Knee pain: If you haven't recently injured the knee, at your age I suspect patella tendonitis is the cause of your symptoms. Prior cartilage damage is another possibility. For now I recommend rest from knee exertion and taking anti-inflammatory medication like Advil or Aleve(with food) for a week. Cold or hot applications may be used,also.  If symptoms persist consult an orthopedic specialist.

Doubtful: Cancer is statistically extremely unlikely.  Much more likely at your age would be conditions such as chondromalacia (wear and tear of the kneecap cartilage) or possibly cartilage wear and tear within the knee joint itself.  I would recommend seeing a physician for evaluation since symptoms have been present for a month.

Get examined!: Your symptoms suggest patellofemoral( kneecap) pain. Your 'cyst' may be causing the pain in the back of your knee ( popliteal/ Bakers' cyst ).Not sure if your 'partial' ACL injury is causing symptoms or not without a thorough examination( it can cause cysts in the knee joint occasssionally.) OA or synovitis: You may have some underlying damage in your knee which
becomes exacerbated with prolonged exercise.
You may have some degenerative ostearthritic changes
or synovitis which may become more symptomatic with
prolonged activity.

Anterior knee pain: Anterior knee pain is quite common.  It typically involves irritation of the cartilage from the area surrounding the knee cap.  It is made worse with stairs, kneeling, and squatting.  Easy things to try initially include a low impact quadriceps strengthening exercise including riding a bike, elliptical machine or swimming.  If you have locking of the knee, you should consult a physician.

Uncertain: This is not clear, but it is unlikely arthritis and more likely bursitis or tendinitis. When you get your evaluation besides examination you have imaging and x-rays and possibly other studies to help clarify.
