Tracking Disorder: All joints can make noise. If the noise hurts, that may indicate a problem. Most people without a history of trauma and pain with stairs is usually a patellar tracking disorder. The knee cap can rub against the femoral groove when going up/down stairs causing inflammation and pain. This is often resolved with consistent rehab. You should see a sports medicine specialist or an orthopedist.

Patellar pain: The most common cause of knee pain and crepetance walking up and down stairs is patello-femoral pain / chondromalacia of the patello-femoral surfaces. Often appropriate excercise can be successful in limiting these symptoms.
