Patellofemoral pain?: Based on your description of the problem, your young age, and a negative x-ray, i'm suspicious that your pain may be patellofemoral in nature. If this is the case, exercises to strengthen the quadriceps can be very helpful. An elastic knee brace may also help. Since the symptoms are acute, it is possible that you have a torn tendon or ligament. Ultrasound or MRI can be very helpful.
