developed mastitis with an abscess and mrsa. received iv vancomycin ( 5 months ago) currently root canal done on abscess tooth, what is the likelihood of mrsa moving to my mouth signs and symptoms to look for!

Possible, not likely: Staph (whether MRSA or non-MRSA types) is not a common cause of dental abscesses, although it could happen. All abscess symptoms are pretty much the same, no matter what bacteria are involved:  swelling, pain, redness, and potentially draining pus. Discuss with your dentist and follow her advice if antibiotic treatment is prescribed.

Saliva: The acid in your stomach should neutralize any MRSA present in your saliva

Infection vs coloniz: Rather complicated question. 1st, MRSA is everywhere. 90% of hospitals can find MRSA on a surface somewhere if you take enough swabs. 2nd, MRSA colonization (on the skin) doesn't mean "contracting" an infection (symptoms). MRSA has to bypass skin &amp; get into the blood. (An open cut or wound from her "whacking" can do it). Lastly, your immune system plays a role. Some are susceptible; others aren't.

i'm a healthcare worker and my snot dripped into my babies mouth. if mrsa were to be living i my nose what will happen to the baby? she's 7 weeks.

Your flora: are already a part of your baby as are your antibodies.  If you are worried about MRSA colonization you can be cultured.

How: How were you exposed .  Patients with MRSA should be in isolation.  If you are concerned, see your GP (or Urgent Care if you don't have a GP) for an evaluation.

Contagious: MRSA is difficult to eradicate. It is often cared in your respiratory tract. This can so,regimes be treated by using ointment such as Bactroban in your nasal passages. Repeat swabs should determine if you continue to carry the bacteria. Sometimes other household members or close contacts may also be carriers and should be treated at the same time.

i shook somebody's hand who had mrsa in leg. didn't wash hands because couldn't and smoked a cig after. could i get it in my mouth?

Probably not: This is a very frightening new situation indeed! As there's nothing certain, it makes no sense to worry backwards. Do be really careful in the future if you have occasion to interact w/ patients like this. (Also, some would say not to smoke). Obviously, if you notice symptoms, get an exam and inform the Dr of this episode. It's a low probability. Best!

Not right place: You need the services of an Infectious Disease Specialist.  Ask your General a Practitioner for guidance.  If you don't have a GP call your local hospital or medical society for recommendation.

Very unlikely: MRSA is very rarely on teeth. Usually on skin or in/around nose.

is mrsa transmitted  through saliva?

Close contact: Mrsa is usually spread through contact with someone’s skin or personal items (towels, razors, etc). Mrsa is more likely to be spread in situations where people are in close contact with others. To prevent MRSA wash your hands often, keep cuts covered, and don't share towels or razors.
