how long is it normal to have discomfort in tooth after cavity filling? was told cavity back molar. had no symptoms. now after five days still have sensitivity/discomfort. never had this issue before. and is new dentist.

Sensitive Tooth: It is not uncommon for recently restored teeth to be sensitive, especially if the cavity was deep. Many times even deep cavities are asymptomatic. No pain does not mean no problem. Your dentist knows how deep the decay was and is the best person to answer your questions.

Could be bite?: several things could be the cause of tooth pain.  Cavities could cause the tooth to be sensitive to cold or hot but touching it should not cause pain.  Teeth change position every day in very subtle ways.  sometimes the tooth changes position enough that the opposing tooth can bruise the ligaments that hold the tooth to the bone.  This can cause sore teeth, bone and gums.  Have a dentist check it

White filling: You can have a white filling placed. Or you can extract the tooth. But if it needs a filling, it needs a filling... Not much more can be said.

Small or large?: It depends on the size of the cavity.  Small cavities can be easily filled with a tooth colored resin material while larger cavities may require porcelain inlays or crowns.

Infection ?: If the deep cavity continues to rot your tooth, the nerve will die. Bacteria will travel through your tooth, into your bone. You will probably get an abscess. You will probably be in unbearable pain. You might get swollen. You may go to the er. You will suffer a lot, and in the end, you will need to the same thing... Have your tooth extracted by a dentist.

See dentist: Cavity is diagnosed by x- ray only done by your dentist. If your pain persists you better see a dentist.

can you tell me if a (painful, molar) cavity goes down into the gum, will they have to pull it?

Perhaps: If it goes too deep, then yes, you may lose the tooth.  But your dentist will do everything possible to try and save the tooth first.
