Your doctor: Your OB or midwife will do any repair you need. Occasionally, your provider isn't comfortable with the kind of tear you have and will call in a specialist to assist them or do the repair.

Simple cleaning OK: Many wounds will continue to ooze a bit of serum after closure & that can build up & provide food for skin germs that could later invade & infect it. A  brief cleaning of the area with soap & water or peroxide  being sure to leave it dry can remove the serum & prevent infection. Working around stitches with a wet q tip is also helpful.

Accepted Answer

Wound care: Gently wash the area with mild soap & warm water; rinse; pat dry; apply clean dressing if one was present (ideally, antibiotic ointment, non-stick dressing, topper gauze/tube gauze if available & appropriate to the wound site). Watch for signs of infection: heat, redness, increased pain, pus, separation of wound edges.

how long after you get a wound that requires stitches can you actually wait to get stitches?

Depends: It is usually best to be seen right away.  If the wound is clean or cleaned up, and depending on the locatin on the body, some physicians will allow up to 12 hours.  Some longer.  If the wound is dirty, a puncture or contaminated, get seen right away.  There should be very few reasons to delay closure of a wound.  Be very careful and cautions and err on the side of immediacy.

could you tell me what household items can i use to clean and stitch a wound in an emergency?

Keep it simple: Use plain soap and water gently to clean in and around the wound.  Pat dry gently. The problem is finding something to "stitch" the wound together that is not carrying a lot of dust, dirt and stuff. Plain thread would work but you increase your risk of infection with it.  Better to cover the open area with a clean cloth and get to someone who can do what really needs to be done to maximize healing.

High protein diet: A high protein diet will help in healing the injuries. This may be a combination of fish, chicken and other meats; beans and you may even wish to use protein supplements. Go easy on carbohydrates and saturated fats.

hi i have had my disk removed home the next day the wound is 2 inches covered with a plaster how often shall i replace the plaster and when can i get it wet its dissolve able stitches thanks?

Ask your surgeon: You should have received wound care instructions and activity restrictions from your surgeon.  Every surgeon tends to have his own specific post op care routine that can vary from patient to patient for several reasons.  I do not have enough information to guide you appropriately.

i had a 4th degree tear 4 months ago and i've just noticed a stitch hasn't devolved and my dr didn't cut it when she did a few others. none of the drs have mentioned it. is it okay to leave? should i see a dr about cutting it? idk why they haven't cut it

Should be gone?: Absorbable sutures should be gone by now. Have your doctor look at it and decide. You should be also checked to see if it is healing well. That is a bad tear. All the best.
