To what purpose?: Are either of these drugs prescribed, and do the prescribers know that you are doing this, particularly mixing alcohol with them?  The combination of opioids and benzodiazepines can be potentially lethal, and rarely is helpful to the individual's underlying problems. You need to be under the care of an addiction treatment professional for your multiple problems, including psychological counseling.

Yes: Suboxone and Xanax (alprazolam) are drugs in the opiate and benzodiazepine class of medications respectively, both of which can cause physical dependence, and also cause addiction to individuals who are susceptible to the development of addiction.  The person in question should have a good assessment by a physician certified by the american society of addiction medicine (http://www.Asam.Org/).

Depends on your Dr.: Many doctors (myself included) have many concerns about the use of benzodiazepines in general, and Xanax (alprazolam) in particular (much higher potential for abuse) in people in recovery from opiate dependency, and particularly those who are being treated with Suboxone or methadone.  However, there are no drug interactions, and Vivitrol does not block the effects of benzodiazepines.  Talk to provider.

Long half-life: The elimination half-life of xanax (alprazolam) is about 11.2-26.9 hours. It takes almost 6 elimination half-life's for a drug to be cleared from the human body. Well... It could take a maximum of 161.4 hours or 6.7 days (6 x 26.9 hours) for xanax (alprazolam) to be completely eliminated. Rec. See your prescribing physician to express your concerns.

Time Dependency: Narcotic withdrawal times and severity are complex phenomena and not easy to summarize. The time it takes the body to get rid of narcotics (half-lives) may have far more to do with length and severity of dependence, malnutrition, sleep deprivation and kidney and liver function than the pharmacokinetic profile of the drug. Klonopin (clonazepam): Not a bad product but may need to change dose or try something else. Work with your doctor since your brain is chronically having altered brain hormone response from the other meds.

Xanax (alprazolam): The issue of the anxiety disorder is whether a formal evaluation and formal testing was done for this diagnosis. So Suboxone doctors may allow you to take xanax (alprazolam) others may not.
