i am taking 20mg fluoxetine and 15mg mirtazapine for depression. is this an effective combination?

Although these two: medications are used for treatment of depression there is a slightly increased risk of serotonin syndrome associated with this combination. Whether it is effective will have to be determined clinically. In other words you will see if it works for you. Otherwise the doses are well within the appropriate range. Discuss your concerns with your health care provider who has your whole medical history.

been on mirtazapine 7.5mg for two months. doc says to stop and  start prozac (fluoxetine) 20mg.  is this ok?

For what?: I am not sure why you would be switching medications. If you are taking Mirtazapine for depression, you are not taking a therapeutic dose (30 mg is therapeutic). If you are taking it for insomnia, Prozac does not usually cause sleepiness. Also, if your list above is correct, you are already on zoloft (sertraline) at a dose that is not therapeutic. If you are not seeing a psychiatrist, ask for a referral.

YES: The dose of mirtazepine is very low and so you can easily switch.

Not unusual: Combining two antidepressants to address symptoms is not unusual, especially if they have different mechanisms of action that influence each other synergistically. However, the timing of medication can affect impact of potential side effects.  Recommend discussing any concerns with taking more than one medication for your particular condition with your doctor. Depends: Prozac (fluoxetine) and mirtazpine are actually very similar medications in terms of mechanism of action.  Medication combinations will affect each patient a bit differently.  They are definitely safe to use together under the guidance of physician.  If they are helping you feel better then I would say they are a great combo! :)

Treatment Failure: When a treatment fails to provide the relief you see then you communicate this to the treating physician. Remember pills will never CURE your anxiety. You must be doing some form of therapy or education on how you respond to your feelings to get better.

is it safe to take prozac 40mg, tamazepam 30mg, and remeron (mirtazapine) 15mg at the same time? i take the prozac in the morning and the other 2 at night

Accepted Answer

YES/NO: This is not an unusual combination of medication.  Members of these families of medications can be and are given together as a protocol. Personally i don't use temazepam in my patients when treating mood or anxiety disorders, however this is just a difference amongst doctors in their choice of sleep meds or med protocols in general 
feel better.

after my dads stroke, his dr put him on prozac and remeron (mirtazapine) to help him sleep! can these 2 drugs together cause severe mood changes? what do i do?

Accepted Answer

Yes: I would not use either drug with a patient who has had a stroke, as the adverse effect profile might present in a far more intense fashion, especially suicide risks with Prosac.  I personally feel uncomfortable with the approach, and recommend a visit to a geriatrician or psychiatrist to get this straightened out.
