Control measures: Are available, but at age 60 some of our meds are risky.  If hypertension or heart disease is present, would avoid triptans, and perhaps select dolovent (otc) to stop the headache.  To prevent, which i would prefer, could use prescription (topirimate, depakote) or otc (riboflavin, butterbur, feverfew, co-q10).  See a headache specialist and start appropriate meds.

Presume you mean : Sumatriptan, which is the very oldest triptan.  Too much too frequently can risk heart attack or stroke, so much stay within guidelines.  Immediate drowsiness or dizziness can occur, and rarely contributes to a bit more nausea, but really side effects relatively uncommon. Unlikely to cause long-term problems, as long as blood pressure normal and cardiovasc risks absent.

Yes, potentially: If one looks in pdr, one would think that all drugs could cause headaches, but some are more often the culprits.  Watch out for female hormonal agents, medicines used for blood pressure control, items to control thyroid fnctn, some ms and anti-epileptic drugs, just to name a few.

will predisone for a few days break a 2 week long migraine? i can't use most other migraine drugs and am desperate. saw neuro, nothing serious wrong.

Hard to tell: Have you asked the neurologist? Since he knows you better than us, i will ask him first. I don't think few days of Prednisone will cause any harm, but it's hard to predict the benefits and side effects. For chronic migraine i maintain them on very low dose of amytriptyline and inderal (propranolol). Better discuss with your doctors who know your history better.

i have confirmed migraine diagnosis and if taken in time, imitrex (sumatriptan) works. can one build a tolerance to the imitrex (sumatriptan) drug needing to up the dose?

Tolerance to the med: The best way to treat migraine is prevention, either by avoiding trigger mechanisms or medications tryptans are the only meds that can be taken even when the headache is ongoing .Read the drug insert tolerance to this type of medication is unlikely.

Sure, many choices: Fda approved preventatives include depakote, topamax, (topiramate) propranalol, timolol, but have seen some success with calcium channel blockers and nsaid's, and occas lithium.  Abortive meds include the triptans and ergot amines, with some success with intranasal xylocaine.  See a headache specialist in your city.

why wont my headache go away ? its been here since august and  constantly throbbing, been told its migraine drugs don't help. feel like im in a daze :(

Get 2nd opinion: Not sure who told you they were migraines but frequently other types of headaches are misdiagnosed as migraines. If you haven't already, i would get opinions from both a neurologist and an interventional pain management physician. I frequently see patients who are misdiagnosed as having migraines when in fact they have either occipital neuralgia or cervicogenic headaches from cervical facet joints.

Yes ER visit: for IV infusion is warranted. The abortive medication will not help. Migraine is a serious and complex neurologic disorder.  This condition must be professionally managed. Rec.: see an orofacial pain or headache specialist for evaluation and prophylactic management to avoid unnecessary future pain, suffering and ER visits.

It depends: There are three main kinds of headaches: migraines, tension and cluster headaches. The best advise for you, is to start by seeing a doctor who sees a lot of patients with headaches, usually a board certified neurologist. Some university medical centers have headache clinics. You are smart to want to avoid getting hooked on pain killers or opiates, but there are many other treatments available.
