It depends: There are three main kinds of headaches: migraines, tension and cluster headaches. The best advise for you, is to start by seeing a doctor who sees a lot of patients with headaches, usually a board certified neurologist. Some university medical centers have headache clinics. You are smart to want to avoid getting hooked on pain killers or opiates, but there are many other treatments available.

HA or migraine: Laying down in a dark, quiet place and relaxing can be helpful in getting rid of any headache, especially a migraine. It is often necessary to take medicine in order to stop the pain. There are medications specific for the treatment of migraines that are not narcotics. In general, narcotics are not the best way to treat headaches.
