Nerve compression: You did not state the 3 fingers but it looks like it is the thumb the index and middle finger. You probably have pressure on your nerves and you should use a splint to hold the wrist flat rather than bent and probably see a doctor if no relief soon.

Many things: The problem could or be anywhere from the spinal cord, to a nerve root to the brachial plexus to a peripheral nerve.  A brain problem is less likely since you do not mention a problem with your face.  A neurologist can help determine what the problem might be.  The cause of this type of symptom is usually not serious, fortunately.

i have been diagnosed with carpal tunnel. the thumb and first two fingers on my right hand are going numb during the night. when i wake up and the blood starts flowing back i have excruciating pain. can't this cause damage to my hand?

Yes. : Yes.  Carpal tunnel syndrome is structural.  A normal tunnel that tendons and nerves pass through to the hand is tighter or looser in individuals based on genetics--just like loose or tight joints.  Those of us with tight tunnels gradually develop carpal tunnel syndrome.  The end result is permanent nerve damage (weakness, atrophy, numbness).  It's nothing you are doing that is causing this.  You are just starting to notice that you have the disease.  It is a very slowly progressive disease and you might be able to manage the symptoms with wrist splints at night for years.  When you start getting numb in spite of the splints or when the numbness lingers for more than 5-10 minutes, then it's time to have surgery.

Injury???: How long have you had it? If it was not an injury that you remember, could it be one you forgot about?  Like after a weekend party? If not seek care. Most injuries on the tip of one finger will self resolve over time. If it is something else, is a bit odd, so see your doctor, but I have seen odd things before.

Pain, numbness in --: Thumb side of the hand/wrist/fingers would point towards a carpal t syndrome. Other causes could be tendonitis or even RA could have similar symptoms (along with swelling, etc). Use a wrist brace and use it all the time.
If not improving see your pcp or preferably an ortho surgeon to be properly evaluated.

Nerve-related: Numbness is typically caused by one  of the nerve disorders. If it is really significant then it may spread to involve other nerves. On the other hand it might be something temporary and will go away in a few weeks. Keep an eye and record its location and extent, in your  diary. Make weekly recordings for the next couple of months.If it gets worse(further loss of sensation) get a med-check up.
