Many things: The problem could or be anywhere from the spinal cord, to a nerve root to the brachial plexus to a peripheral nerve. A brain problem is less likely since you do not mention a problem with your face. A neurologist can help determine what the problem might be. The cause of this type of symptom is usually not serious, fortunately.

Possiible the neck: Numbness is usually a neurologic complaint. There may be a number of possible causes of shoulder pain and hand numbness. One possible cause is a "pinched nerve" in the neck. Consider seeing a dictor for an exam and appropriate studies. Thank you for the question.
